The Senate Committee on Federal Character on Monday, February 8 walked out the officials representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) out of the budget defence meeting.
This was due to the failure of their bosses, Babachir David Lawal (SGF) and Boboye Oyeyemi (FRSC)) to appear before the committee to defend their 2016 budgets proposals.
Senator Tijjani Yahaya Kaura, the Chairman of the committee, and other members were angered by their absence said it was unacceptable.
He also said a matter as important as the budget defence should not be treated with levity and they should appear themselves before the panel.
Kaura also added that the failure of the two bosses to appear for their 2016 budget defence, the senate committee will not take their estimates into consideration.
“I cannot understand why the SGF and the head of the FRSC failed to show up to defend their budget. That is not acceptable because the budget defense is something that should be taken seriously.
“Until they are prepared to appear themselves to defend their budgets for this year, I’m sorry to say this committee would not entertain representatives,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Shettima Bukar Abba , the Chairman of Federal Character Commission and Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli, the acting National Coordinator of Servicom, while appearing separately to defend their commission’s budgets on Monday, February 8 complained about low funding of their establishment thereby causing low productivity.
According to Abba, officials of the federal character mostly relied on the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government for funding in the course of carrying out exercises.
However, Senator Kaura assured the commitment of the committee to look into the matter and address the issue.
